Gardening can be heartbreaking as well as rewarding. I have a lovely garden at the farm. Like you I planted a lot of tough, Mediterranean type plants to see us through the drought. Guess what - now it hasn't stopped raining and they don't like being so wet! My roses are just about to break out into their first glorious flush! Keep enjoying your garden!
